Do check her out.

Bloggers fall into: adult/teen readers, librarians/educators, writers and children lit/YA industry writers.

I bumbled around for a bit and found my niche. While I am a youth advocate the majority of this group couldn't or wouldn't relate to a black woman old as their mother. There are a few exceptions notably the amazing teen blogger, Ari who I started out mentoring but I swear I'm now following her lead. :-)susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14924982664582970754noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770001537109672571.post-60394726085805594802010-01-21T16:13:19.214-06:002010-01-21T16:13:19.214-06:00Wonderful post! I agree that I would love to see more kids of color represented in books that are across the genre spectrum and not just in historical "realism" books. Although those are indeed important like you mentioned, there's a whole other world out there where kids of color can experience history, culture and numerous storylines especially in fantasy and science fiction.

I would love to see publishers step up but I wonder if it's a case of authors not being able to sell such books to publishers and/or not many writing them. Thanks to Tu Publishing, I hope this is changing. Hopefully more indie/small publishers and authors will take note of this giant gap in the margin. I've been thinking about writing YA novels myself and the lack of exposure and representation of main characters of color in YA books for our current and future generation is a growing inspiration.

Thanks to you and Ari for spreading the word!Rae Lorihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18401577264246893702noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770001537109672571.post-60009879178790198042010-01-20T12:01:29.753-06:002010-01-20T12:01:29.753-06:00Thanks! That's awesome. I should say that I...Thanks! That's awesome. I should say that I'm not the best at updating FYI. But I'm actually in the (slow) process of rethinking this blog to focus more on youth issues, books that don't promote kyriarchy, etc. I haven't been on the YA blogosphere much, to my detriment, but I looked at Color Online last night and Black-Eyed Susan this morning and it's really good to see other people (besides me, isolated at my desk with my publisher reps) talking about these things. It's certainly not being talked about enough on the feminist blogs.

My (limited) impression of the YA/kiddie lit blogs is that they're mainly written by readers & reviewers, as well as the occasional writer or librarian. Do you think that's accurate? Have you seen many booksellers blogging? Because there seems to be a lot of confusion about how the book industry works, how books get carried and sold, and who one's allies are in the industry. I think I may write another post about that.DontBoxSarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09984411997072308438noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770001537109672571.post-23523490880934475842010-01-19T23:02:27.305-06:002010-01-19T23:02:27.305-06:00I loved this book.

(ok, so maybe they do have bad attitudes... but that's a separate issue.) Anyway, it's great that you've talked with your students about it!Phvernhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14697015924227579509noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4770001537109672571.post-77915387958225097542009-01-10T12:23:00.000-06:002009-01-10T12:23:00.000-06:00Rock those citations. Due to recession there is increased funding for all types of grants. Even lenders are bending over backwards to bail you out too. Regardless of statistics, there is people getting tons of cheap money for personal use, investments, start businesses, buy homes, pay off debt, and more. Bailout is for YOUAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
